It’s just around the corner…are you ready??? If not, it’s time to start preparing your fleet for this year’s International Roadcheck from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) taking place from June 5-7, 2018. And, as you might have guessed with the ELD compliance mandate recently taking effect, the focus this year is going to be on hours-of-service compliance.
Although inspectors primarily conduct level-1 inspections, each year CVSA identifies one area to focus on in an effort to increase awareness. While last year’s focus was on cargo securement, the top reason drivers were placed out of service was hours-of-service violations. So, between that at the ELD changes it’s only fitting that this year that focus be put on on making sure drivers are keeping it legal when it comes to hours behind the wheel.
CVSA Roadcheck Inspection Overview
The inspections that take place during the Roadcheck are primarily North American Standard Level-1 inspection. This is a 37-step procedure which includes driver inspection and vehicle fitness. It is widely considered as one of the most thorough inspections out there.
During the inspection, drivers may have to provide following:
- Driving license
- Hours-of-Service documentation
- Shipping documentation
- Motor carrier registration
- Medical examiner’s certificate
- Hazardous material paperwork
Additionally, inspectors will be checking things such as: tires, brakes, lights, fuel systems, frames, windshield wipers, wheels and much more. Drivers will be asked to provide their operating credentials and hours-of-service documentation, and will be checked for seat belt usage. Inspectors will also be attentive to apparent alcohol and/or drug impairment.
3 Quick Tips to Prepare for Roadcheck 2018
- It’s imperative that you prepare and educate your drivers on what to expect. While getting the hours-of-service stuff down is a top priority, it’s a good idea to simply make sure everyone is on the same page with what’s going on during the Roadcheck and how you would like them to represent your company in the event they get stopped.
- Encourage all drivers to tidy up. First impressions are a big deal. Having your truck clean and organized will go a long way in dealing with an officer should you be stopped during the Roadcheck. Not to mention, it’ll make life easier for you and your fleet.
